How Dalacin Capsule works

This medicine works by killing or stopping the growth of the bacteria causing your infection.

Dalacin Capsule dosage

Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water. Dalacin C can be taken with or without food. Do not take Dalacin C immediately before lying down. You must wait at least half an hour to reduce the chance of discomfort or pain in your throat or stomach.

Space the doses evenly apart and take them at about the same time each day. Do not open the capsule and disperse its contents. Dalacin C capsules are not recommended in young children who cannot swallow capsules.

Do not stop taking the medicine or lower the dose without checking with your doctor, even if you feel better. Finish your entire course of treatment to avoid antibiotic resistance.

Side effects of Dalacin Capsule

Common

  • Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints
  • Skin rash which may be red or itchy
  • Purple or red-brown spots visible through the skin
  • V-shaped red rash on buttocks and/or upper inner thighs
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Change or loss of taste, or a metallic taste in the mouth
  • Vaginal infection (itching, burning and thick, white discharge)
  • Headache
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Weakness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite

Serious

  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, sweating and fast or irregular heart beats
  • Severe diarrhoea which may have blood and mucus, stomach pain, fever (may indicate a serious bowel condition)
  • Weight loss and fevers, night sweats, fatigue, cough, chest pain, swelling, rash, pain, weakness, confusion
  • Frequent infections such as fever, severe chills, sore throat or mouth ulcers
  • Bleeding or bruising more easily than normal
  • Sudden signs of allergy such as rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing or trouble breathing
  • A burning sensation in the chest rising up to the throat (heartburn)
  • Painful red area of skin with blistering or peeling, or bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals
  • High fever quickly followed by a skin rash
  • Little or no urine with drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, breathlessness
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Black or tarry stools

Warnings and precautions

  • Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. 
  • Clindamycin crosses the placenta. Dalacin C should only be used in pregnancy if clearly needed.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed. 
  • Dalacin C is not recommended during breastfeeding as the active ingredient may pass into breast milk and cause side effects in the baby.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease. 
  • Patients with kidney disease need special consideration and dose adjustment may be needed.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver disease. 
  • Patients with liver disease need special consideration due to the risk of liver damage and dose adjustment may be needed.
  • No information is available about drinking alcohol while taking this medicine. It is advisable to consult your doctor before consumption.
  • Be careful before you drive or use any machines or tools until you know how Dalacin C affects you.
  • Do not take Dalacin C if you are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, lactose, or any of the ingredients.
  • Do not take Dalacin C immediately before lying down; wait at least half an hour to reduce the chance of throat or stomach discomfort.
  • Do not stop taking your medicine or lower the dose without checking with your doctor. Stopping suddenly may mean the infection does not clear or your symptoms return.
  • This medicine may cause diarrhoea due to a bowel infection, which can occur during treatment or even weeks after stopping. 
  • Do not take any medicines for diarrhoea without first checking with your doctor.
  • Do not give your medicine to anyone else, even if they have the same condition as you.

Storage

  • Keep your capsules in the pack until it is time to take them.
  • Store it in a cool dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C, away from moisture, heat, or sunlight.
  • Do not store it in the bathroom, near a sink, in the car, or on window sills.
  • Keep it where young children cannot reach it. A locked cupboard at least one-and-a-half metres above the ground is a good place to store medicines.
  • If you no longer need the medicine or it is out of date, take it to any pharmacy for safe disposal.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date.

When to see a doctor

  • If you get severe diarrhoea, tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse immediately, even if it occurs several weeks after you have stopped taking Dalacin C. You may need urgent medical care.
  • If you get a severe skin rash, tell your doctor immediately, even if the rash occurs after Dalacin C has been stopped. 
  • This may mean you are having an allergic reaction and you may need urgent medical care.
  • If you think you have taken too much Dalacin C, you may need urgent medical attention. 
  • Contact your local poison control center, contact your doctor, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, tongue or throat, or widespread rash or itching.
