Finasteride is a prescription medicine from a class of drugs called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Oral finasteride tablets are FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss and for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, an enlarged prostate) in men. Topical finasteride, including gel forms, has been studied in clinical trials for hair loss but is not FDA-approved.
