Quick overview
Augmentin Tablet contains amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, also known as co-amoxiclav, a penicillin antibiotic combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including ear, sinus, respiratory, urinary, skin, dental, and bone or joint infections. The clavulanic acid component helps prevent bacteria from making the amoxicillin ineffective. It should be taken exactly as directed and the full course should be completed.
What is Augmentin Tablet
Augmentin is an antibiotic that works by killing bacteria that cause infections. It contains two medicines called amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a penicillin, and clavulanic acid helps stop the bacteria from making the amoxicillin inactive.
Augmentin Tablet uses
- Middle ear and sinus infections
- Respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections, including dental infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Pneumonia
- Bronchitis
Benefits of Augmentin Tablet
- Treats a wide range of bacterial infections
- The clavulanic acid helps prevent certain bacteria from becoming resistant to amoxicillin
How Augmentin Tablet works
Augmentin kills the bacteria that cause infections. The amoxicillin fights the bacteria, and the clavulanic acid stops the bacteria from making the amoxicillin stop working.
Augmentin Tablet dosage
Take with a meal, at the start of a meal, to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Tablets can be broken along the score line to make them easier to swallow, but you must take both pieces at the same time.
Space the doses evenly during the day, at least 4 hours apart. Do not take two doses in one hour. Complete the full course even if you feel better.
Do not take Augmentin for more than 2 weeks. If you still feel unwell, go back to see the doctor.
Children aged 6 years or less should preferably be treated with Augmentin oral suspension or sachets. The tablets are not suitable for smaller children.
Avoid taking this medicine together with or just after eating a high-fat meal, as this makes it harder for your body to absorb.
