What is Ponstan Capsule

Although Ponstan can relieve the symptoms of pain and inflammation, it will not cure your condition. Ponstan is not addictive.

How Ponstan Capsule works

Mefenamic acid is an NSAID that works by relieving pain and inflammation.

Ponstan Capsule dosage

Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water. Do not chew the capsules. Take with or after food, as this may help reduce the possibility of stomach upset. Take at the first sign of pain to maximise effectiveness. Do not take for longer than your doctor says and do not exceed the dose your doctor recommends. Do not use in children under 14 years of age.

If you miss a dose and it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose when you are meant to. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

  • Severe pain or tenderness in the stomach

  • Worsening blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes
  • Unusual weight gain, swelling of ankles or legs

Warnings and precautions

  • Do not use Ponstan in children under 14 years of age.
  • Do not use Ponstan if you are allergic to mefenamic acid, aspirin, or any other NSAID medicine including COX-2 inhibitors. If you are allergic and take Ponstan, symptoms may be severe and require urgent medical attention.
  • Do not use Ponstan if you have a gastric ulcer, inflammation or ulceration of the stomach or bowel, kidney disease, severe heart failure, liver failure, or if you had diarrhoea with this medicine in the past.
  • Use of Ponstan may increase your risk of developing cardiovascular events such as heart attack, even if you do not have a history of heart disease.
  • NSAIDs including mefenamic acid can cause serious, potentially fatal stomach or bowel problems including bleeding, ulceration and perforation, which can occur at any time without warning.
  • Ponstan may hide some of the signs of an infection and may make you mistakenly think you are well. Call your doctor straight away if you get an infection while using Ponstan.
  • Do not give Ponstan to anyone else, even if they have the same condition, and do not use it to treat other complaints unless your doctor tells you.
  • Ponstan must not be used at all during the third trimester of pregnancy. 
  • It should not be used during the first two trimesters unless the expected benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the baby. 
  • Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant, and call your doctor straight away if you become pregnant while taking Ponstan.
  • Ponstan is not to be used while breastfeeding. It passes into breast milk and may affect your baby. 
  • Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed.
  • Do not use Ponstan if you have kidney disease. It should not be given to patients with significantly impaired kidney function. 
  • Caution is needed and kidney function should be checked periodically.
  • Do not use Ponstan if you have liver failure. 
  • It should be used with caution in patients with liver impairment, and you should watch for signs of liver problems.
  • Be careful drinking alcohol while taking Ponstan. 
  • As with other NSAID medicines, alcohol may increase your risk of developing gastrointestinal complications. Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol.
  • Be careful before you drive or use any machines or tools until you know how Ponstan affects you. 
  • It may cause dizziness, light-headedness, drowsiness and blurred vision in some people. If this occurs, do not drive.

Storage

  • Store it in a cool dry place away from moisture, heat or sunlight, below 30°C.
  • Do not store it in the bathroom or near a sink, or in the car or on window sills.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date.
  • Keep it where young children cannot reach it.
  • Keep your capsules in the pack until it is time to take them. If you take the capsules out of the pack they will not keep well.
  • If you no longer need to use this medicine or it is out of date, take it to any pharmacy for safe disposal.

When to see a doctor

If you think you have taken too much Ponstan, you may need urgent medical attention. Contact your local poison control center, contact your doctor, or go to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital, even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.

Stop use and call your doctor straight away, or go straight to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital, if you notice any serious side effects.

Call your doctor straight away if you become pregnant while taking Ponstan or if you get an infection while using it.
